The approach used was developed by Greg Wallace, formerly Head at Woodberry Down Community Primary School in Hackney.

 

Feedback from Ofsted on maths teaching at Woodberry Down was very positive.

 

‘Pupils make particularly strong progress in mathematics. Teachers have extremely high expectations of what pupils can achieve and their excellent subject knowledge promotes a thirst for learning. In a Year 6 class, pupils enthusiastically and successfully tackled the complex task of plotting of linear algebraic expressions on graphs. They thoroughly enjoyed the high level of challenge.’ (Woodberry Down Ofsted report, June 2012)

 

Greg was lucky enough to visit Shanghai to observe maths teaching and this experience, combined with many others, has helped shape what Effective Maths is today.
