The Effective Maths Year 6 arithmetic revision programme is being updated for 2025/2026.
BACKGROUND TO THE ARITHMETIC REVISION PROGRAMME
The arithmetic revision programme was introduced in 2016 with the aim of providing a clear sequence to revise number facts and arithmetic in a structured manner. Schools using the programme as intended have achieved very good outcomes in KS2 maths SATS.
The programme design is based on a cumulative approach.
So, Unit 1 focuses on one key skill: multiplying numbers with up to 4 digits by 1-digit numbers (4C7, 5C7a). Unit 2 then revisits the content from Unit 1 and introduces another key skill: dividing numbers with up to 4 digits by 1-digit numbers (5C7b). Unit 3 revisits the content from Units 1 and 2 and introduces more key skills. Each unit continues in this manner.
On completion of each unit children do an end of unit test linked to the work covered in the unit and previous units.
It’s highly recommended that children scoring less than 80% receive 1:1 tutoring to help them identify errors and correct. The idea should be to close gaps. If this means waiting a little, before moving on to the next unit with the whole class, then this is preferable to some children struggling in future units.
IMPROVEMENTS FOR 2025

Relevant improvements are being made for the revised 2025 version.
For example:
• some units are being split
• the range of question formats
encountered will be broadened from the outset: a calculation like 268 × 6 will be also be presented as
o 6 × 268 =
o ___ = 268 × 6
o ___ ÷ 6 = 268
o 268 = ___ ÷ 6

• more examples of alternative methods modelled within the slides to engage learners who are secure with one method
• the cumulative approach used in the 2016 programme is built on in various ways – the steps are smaller and there is more review of prior learning
The first of the new units went online on 23 September 2025. The revised new units will be added to the site approximately every fortnight. There are currently five units online.
It is suggested that the programme is used from after the Autumn half-term. Each unit is divided into parts and the intention is that each part is used to inform short sessions.
