Additional guidance on the independent task
At the start of each set of slides there is now a slide/s entitled ‘Essential features of the independent task’. Analysis of what is involved in the task is provided.
This is being done because, when planning an Effective Maths lesson, it is a good idea to start by looking at the independent task students will complete at the end of the lesson. (i.e. The worksheet towards the end of the slides.) Starting with the independent task is a backward-design principle. It gives a clear idea about where the lesson is heading and should help you understand the role the various slides play in developing understanding in relation to the independent task.
More lessons making explicit use of identified manipulatives
There will be some more lessons with the use of specific manipulatives in mind. This mirrors what happens in the Securing Fluency Programme.
Even more emphasis on language
There will be even more emphasis on developing understanding through accurate use of language. More choral response ‘language focus’ statements are being included within slides. (Pink boxes containing the key language focus statements.)
This is to ensure:
high levels of participation;
students internalise mathematical terminology;
collective purpose and shared identity;
where students are less confident, there is a low-stakes environment where they can participate without the anxiety of being singled out;
immediate formative assessment – by listening to the collective "volume" and accuracy of the response, we can instantly gauge whether the class has grasped a concept or if immediate re-teaching is necessary.
Other updates
All lessons will be online throughout the year. Lessons will still be updated, but they will remain online and not be re-published to a set timetable of dates as they have been in previous years.
The front of each set of slides will no longer say, for example, ‘Year 4’. This will now be referred to as ‘Stage 4’. This is so that when teachers are using slides from a different year group, students are not feeling that they are doing work that is not appropriate for them.
There will be some new lessons on specific topics, including translations.
